Workshop Exercises

Automatic Writing.. this was writing for 8 minutes approximately. I was interrupted by someone talking to me, our internet is too slow at home Rolando so I work at university however sometimes people in the computer lab do stop and call out something, I noticed I had my concentration interrupted briefly just twice... and I used the letter, Q to denote this.

If  I eat a lot of apples and oranges, I start to feel as if I can getting too full and then I want to eat something light such as some grapes. I seem to have changed in to a pear shaped person and I need to correct the “in balance”, as I see it and I need to refocus my energies and attempt to be a little more top heavy because I find my legs are too heavy to carry sometimes. I think that sometimes it is good to have strong little legs because then I can walk long distances, for example to Greensborough from the university in Bundoora and then I feel really tired and I sleep like a little baby. I think the Vietnamese students I live with are awesome in every way imaginable because they have great eating habits and they never seem to vary from the routine, meaning to say, they are very methodical and religious about eating their meals, breakfast, lunch and diner, unlike myself and I tend to eat sporadically and I know that this is not the best idea because our bodies are like machines and need to be fueled and refueled ready for a big day ahead and then they operate at maximum efficiency and then I am able to get a lot done without stopping to take breath.. almost, LOL.  I mean, when I feel that my energy is at an all time optimum level then I know that I won’t have to stop for breaks, rather I can attend class and then return to the computer lab and finish my homework and then go to the library and write some more on the computers there and sometimes I go to the Thomas Cherry Building and I continue to write there. I enjoy the Working With Words subject with Rolando Caputo and I wonder if sometime I can learn Italian and I want to learn the language with Cos who also attends our university. The ladies at CafĂ© Veloci know Italian because they were born in Italy and they are talking their mother tongue together during work hours. I really love the language and many people think I might be Italian, however I am not, I was born in Bundoora a couple of years before the university was built here, in 1965. My mother used to push me in the pram through the university to Northlands and my father picked us up on  his way home from work. My parents have been really good to me, although at the moment there seems to be a standoff between the males and me in the family. Perhaps they think I am always at La Trobe University, which is true enough as I have been here everyday for at least the last five years and then before that, about five days a week. I find that the resources here are second to none other and I thoroughly enjoy the social scene and the landscape is picturesque. I think that we are fortunate to have been Qapart of this university domain for such along stint, in one way or another, for nearly half a decade as this place seems to have the internet which operates at maximum speed, especially on the third level of the library, so I am told. I think that the computer labs are awesome because I can access them 24/7 and I seem to be able to get a computer very easily when I pass by on my way to class and as I do not have a mobile phone this means I can stay in contact with the people I know on facebook through cyberspace. I studied a lot of Sociology before and I recall that in the subjects we learnt a lot about humanity and what it is to be a good person and how to treat other people. I was looking for Rosemary Wearing who taught me on facebook and I found her, fortunately she had a photograph on her home page so I definitely knew it was her. She was one of my all time favourite teachers at the university and I hope I meet up with her again. I think that media studies has been much easier than studying a business degree and I think that Qi was going to be able to write uninterrupted Rolando however I was interrupted by a lecturer in the computer lab and thought I had best talk back.

Edward Hopper Paintings

Conversation/prose story Nighthawks

Night Hawks was inspired by a restaurant on New York’s Greenwich avenue where two streets meet however the image with its carefully constructed composition and lack of narrative has a timeless, universal quality which transcends particular local. There are three customers who are lost in their own thoughts and they have congregated. Hooper’s understanding of the expressive possibilities of light playing on two implied shapes gives the painting an implied shape gives the painting its beauty. Fluorescent light have just come in to usage in the 40’s and the all night diner emits a glow. Hooper eliminated   any reference to an entrance and the four anonymous characters are non-communicative and remote from the viewer as to one another. Hooper acknowledged that in Night Hawks ‘unconsciously’ was a painting of the loneliness souls in a large city.

names.. the woman is Amanda,A the man is Ralph R and the man sitting furtherest away is Stuart S

A: I was wondering if you are going to be here every week at this time, I am rather interested in you.
R: that works for me, 8.30pm on a Tuesday night because my wife goes to the tennis club at that time.
A: great, you are looking exceptionally handsome by the way, younger than ever, I am so glad we bumped in to each other after all those years apart, I could not have stood it another minute more.
R:: me either, I have been making cut-ups at home of what you look like and when I did see you for the first time last week, I thought to myself, this girl is the one for me and I will never, ever let go of her or let her out of my sight again. This girl makes me feel good in side and ...
A: Is that a gun in your pants or are you just glad to see me?
S: I heard that and well, obviously, you still do it for him, I have not seen him looking this happy in years, that ain't no gun in his pants sweetheart, let me assure you of that... Get a room.. there are plenty available upstairs.
A: oh, that would suit me down to the ground, why thankyou for the suggestion Stuart, you always did have bright ideas and why don't you join us for that matter, you are looking exceptionally handsome I might add.
S: I don't mind if I do, come along then, a menage a trois is always high on my agenda, especially with the two of you, Amanda and Ralph.

interior monologue Automat  (1927)

The painting does portray a lone woman who stares in to a cup of coffee in an Automat time. The reflection of identical row of light fixtures stretches out through the night blackened window. Hooper’s wife, so served as a model for the women however Hooper altered her face from being a 44 year old woman much younger in years and her figure to was a curvy, full-figured woman and one critic describes the woman in the painting as flat chested and boyish. The woman’s circumstances and her mood are ambiguous. She is well-educated and wears make-up perhaps to indicate she is on her way to work at a job where personal appearances is important or else she is going to a social occasion.
She has removed one glove which could indicate she has been distracted and that she is in a hurry or that she has come from outside and is not yet warmed up. The latter possibility seems unlikely.

 what the woman thinks about.
Well, when I get home today, I plan on making a pizza with anchovies for my new family. It will be better than ever, better than one I have ever made before, they will be so happy with my efforts and I am certain that they will want me to make them in the shop next week for the customers. I believe that my skills in this area are second to nobody and that this shop will keep me on for along time to come at La Trobe University in Bundoora. I am aware that my pizza is relatively new to the menu, having made pizzas and coffee for the last seven years, I think that cafe Veloci would benefit from my Food Technology certificate skills and as far as being creative is concerned and I believe that Rosanna, Philamena and Andrew will want to take home the pizzas that I offer them. If I am really good today I believe that they will give me a pizza making job next week and I think they will let me start making coffee the following week. I have been taking the rubbish for them for along time and I think that the International students will be more than happy to offer me a hand.

Exercise 1: Exit Through The Gift Shop reflection

Banksy is a pseudonymous English based graffiti artist, political activist, film director and painter. His satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine both dark humor with graffiti done in a distinctive stenciling technique. Artistic works of social and political commentary have been featured on walls, streets and bridges and cities. Throughout the world Banksy’s  work was made up of the Bristol underground then which involved collaboration between musicians and artists.

This is the inside story of Street Art - a brutal and revealing account of what happens when fame, money and vandalism collide. Exit Through the Gift Shop follows an eccentric shop-keeper turned amateur film-maker as he attempts to capture many of the world's most infamous vandals on camera, only to have a British stencil artist named Banksy turn the camcorder back on its owner with wildly unexpected results.

One of the most provocative films about art ever made, Exit Through the Gift Shop is a fascinating study of low-level criminality, comradeship and incompetence. By turns shocking, hilarious and absurd, this is an enthralling modern-day fairytale... with bolt cutters.

Exercise 2: Street Art

Scarface… this photograph was taken next to the Aldi wall on the corner of Grimshaw Street, Plenty Road, Bundoora, Vic, 3083. I think the character is representative of Scarface because of the scar on his cheek and I can see the word written next to him.
Scarface is an ’83 American crime film which is directed by Brian De Palma and stars Al Pacino as Tony Montana. It was a remake of the 1932 film with the same name and is a story of a Cuban refugee who came to Miami in 1980 during the cocaine boom of the eighties.

Exercise 3: Pop Art Influence:I think that the  three photographs aptly define Pop Art:
Pop Art is an art movement to have emerged from the fifties in Britain and in the late fifties in the U.S.A Pop Art presented a challenge to traditions of fine art and included imagery from popular culture such as news, advertising and so forth. In pop art, material may be visually removed from the known context and then combined or isolated with unrelated material. Pop Art refers not as much to the art but rather to the attitudes which led up to it. Pop art employs components of mass culture which includes comic books, advertising and culture objects which may even appear mundane!!!

Exercise 4: Helvetica reflection
Helvetica is a much used sans-serif typeface which was developed in 1957 by Max Miedinger with Eduard Hoffman at the Haas Type Foundary of Munchenstein, Switzerland. Haas set out to create a new sans-serif typeface that could compete with Akzidenz-Grotesk in the Swiss market. The aim of this design was to create a neutral typeface without clarity, no intrinsic meaning to its form and to be used on a wide variety of signage.

Exercise 6

CREDIT SEQUENCES
Analyse the credit sequences to these four films: Ed Wood (Tim Burton), The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (David Fincher, US remake); Seven (David Fincher); Goldfinger (James Bond film from sixties)
Ed Wood(Tim Burton)
Director of batman, Edward Scissorhand made movies like nobody else. Do you know about film production? Well, he had an eye for talent and a passion for storytelling and a secret he could not hide. He liked dressing in women’s clothes and in the true story of an unforgettable film maker, a legacy that will live forever, Ed Wood, a Tim Burton film, touchstone pictures presents a Burton/Di Novi Production, Tim Burton film, Johnny Depp, Martin Landau, Sarah Jessica Parker, Patricia Arquette, Jeffrey Jones and Bill Murray. The executive producer is Michael Lehmann, written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, produced by Denise Di Novi, Tim Burton, directed by Tim Burton.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo HD Trailer-David Fincher Version
This is the first trailer for the David Fincher version of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” based on the novel, With the Dragon Tattoo (David Fincher, US remake). She is one of the best investigators he has. She asks, anything wrong with report? He had a long standing sexual relationship. He says, I need your help, you will be investigating, you will meet my family. Someone murdered Harriet and for past forty years has driven me insane.  How many partners did you have in last month. Why don’t we start with me. He needs a research assistant. He says, you don’t think we would hire anyone for something like this.

It is a film that he went to at a film festival as they were talking about remaking it. He thought, no way, they should not remake, he hated “Let Me In”. No don’t make it, well there is a huge remake scene and seeing the original one, you know what is happening.  For him, he said, don’t do it, it will be horrible, he thought, give it a chance and he suggests to see the Swedish film. The new girl, Rooney Marra is naked throughout most of the film and she is beautiful, she has tattoos and piercings and everything they did to transform the role. She was a sweet looking American and now she lost 20 pounds for the role, coming down to character and motivation, Fincher built on relationship. The girl with the dragon tattoo, Elizabeth is making an investigation. She does not follow investigation, they say he is at an island and cut off from the rest of the world. This is the new dragon tattoo, it is stand-alone, the girl with the dragon tattoo, Elizabeth is investigating linear magazine, he is being sued, he created a slanderous story as he said that someone’s practices were illegal, we meet with him, getting out of court and he gets hired by another rich guy to investigate a murder that has happened in his family. The niece has been missing along time and he wants the editor to find the killer.  He offers redemption as he has information on the guy who took him to court that  can prove that he is correct in saying his practices are illegal. They work together to try and solve crime so it becomes intense, the film is 2.5 hours long, it was great, if you have seen the Swedish films, revisit this. Fincher plays to you. He did a better job of creating the story between the two. In the Swedish version it is very on-off. You understand more of what happens in the final form, he is going to have this as a standalone film, the way it ended, as we have seen the other two films we see where it goes from here.  This movie makes so much money. The opening sequence, the cover of Led Zeppelin is direct reference to James Bond. There is a James Bond montage; there is oily substance and a dragon coming out of her back.

Seven is directed by David Fincher and starring Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Gwyneth Paltrow. Detective Summerset is looking for a way out. Mills is looking for a way in. Now they are caught in a game, the body was found on Tuesday morning, this will be the very definition of strict justice, this guy is methodical, exacting and patient, he is two murders away from completing his masterpieces. Freeman Paltrow  in Seven. Let He Who is Without Sin Try to Survive.
Goldfinger, (James Bond) Title sequence from Guy Hamilton’s 1964 film “Goldfinger”, starring Sean Connery as James Bond. Many of the iconic aspects of a typical James Bond were established in Dr. No, beginning with what is known as the gun barrel sequence, an introduction to the character through the view of a gun barrel, and a highly stylized main title sequence, both created by Maurice Binder
